Owned by Michael O’Leary of Gigginstown House Stud, Bog Warrior is the 10-year-old Bay Gelding from Tony Martin’s yard and this year looks set to have a run in the 2014 Grand National where he has been given a winnable 11-02 to run off.
Whether his name was chosen before or after they knew the kind of ground he would like to run on is unknown but suffice to say that the name is very apt in that he really does love the boggy heavy going far more than the quicker ground and has won six times on it.
For his age he hasn’t had the same number of chase starts as some of his potential Grand National rivals with only eight starts over fences although he has also run six times over hurdles.
He was pretty much out of action since Cheltenham 2013 where he placed fifth in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle and didn’t re-appear until February 15th 2014 where he unseated at Gowran park.
He did slightly better in March at Down Royal finishing fourth but the statistics and form are not on his side which is probably why he’s as much as 66/1 with Paddy Power Bookmakers.
At the five day declaration stage, Bog Warrior was withdrawn from the 2014 Crabbies Grand National.
