Dr Richard Newland is a former NHS GP who’s turned his hand to turning out some smart winners on the racecourse.
Despite having a small string of runners, just twelve of them and most of which cost £10,000 or less, Newland’s strike rate is impressive. At favoured courses like Plumpton a 40% win rate is not unusual.
2014 Grand National Winning Trainer Of Pineau De Re
The Doctor is modest about the success he’s enjoyed as a trainer, “There's nothing magical about it. You just need to find the right horses, give them plenty of grub and exercise and, hopefully, place them well.
“I suppose one difference with us being so small is that we can turn them out and they spend lots of time with their heads down eating grass.”
He believes in happy horses and that contributed greatly to his epic win in the 2014 Grand National with Pineau De Re.
With Leighton Aspell on board, he saddled the 25/1 shot as his first entry into the great race and said following the win “I'm not intending to change because I really enjoy it, it's great fun and it's not my primary source of income.
“But it's nice to have a bit of cash in the coffers to be able to buy some new ones.”
Speaking recently to the Racing Post Dr Newland spoke about Pineau De Re's chances of a return visit to the Grand National fences saying “He is fine, he has had a lovely holiday and he has just gone back into pre-training this week.
“He will run over hurdles once, maybe twice before Christmas, then hurdles again until the National hopefully.”
