Brendan Powell Jnr is a National Hunt jockey based at Colin Tizzard’s yard and at just 19 years of age will be one of the youngest to ride out in the 2014 Crabbies Grand National when he partners Battle Group for trainer Johnny Farrelly.
Son of Brendan Powell Snr, himself a Grand national winning jockey on Rhyme N Reason in 1988, Brendan Jnr is no doubt hoping to follow in his fathers footsteps when he tackles the Aintree fences on April 5th 2014.
This will be his first time riding in the Grand National since turning professional at just 16 years of age. At the time he said: “It’s bred into me; it’s in my blood, so it’s more or less the only route I was going to take.
“It’s great fun. Obviously, there are the dangers that come with it, but the rush you get from riding around places like this is unreal.
“It makes you feel like you are flying most of the time; it doesn’t get much better.”
This season alone Brendan Powell Jnr has ridden 20 chase winners from 112 starts the equvilalent to an 18% win rate and adding in places has earned connections in excess of £228K.
