Riding Mon Mome in the 2008 Grand National for the first time, at the age of 19, he was one of the youngest riders ever to start the Grand National and in April 2009, he topped it off by winning the Conditional Championship making him the leading Conditional jockey in the UK for the 2008 season.

A popular jockey, Coleman also rides for Tim Vaughan and although he recently fell foul of the new whip rules, introduced in October 2011, he took a positive view of the situation, blogging on RacingUK.com “A break’s given me chance to catch up with lots of admin at home, see some friends, and it means I’ll be able to spend Christmas with my family in Ireland for the first time in a while.

“It’s been a stop-start season so far, and I’ve now missed nine weeks through injury and suspension. The whip rules might need a bit more tweaking further down the line, but I think the lads are getting used to them and there are fewer stories in the press now which is a good thing.

“Personally speaking, what’s done is done and you have to get on with it. There’s no point throwing your toys out of the pram. I just can’t wait to be back in action on the 27th.”

And back he was, winning his first race at Chepstow for Tim Vaughan on Rev It Up and just in time for the 2011 Coral Welsh Grand National on board Our Island where he ran a very respectable race, finishing just outside of the places in 6th position.

Coleman has ran in in the last four Grand Nationals, Grand Slam Hero in 2011 (fell), Mon Mome in 2010 (fell), Stan in 2009 (fell) and Mon Mome 2008 (10th).
