In one of the most exciting finishes for a number of years 12 year old Amberleigh House won the ‘Martell” sponsored 2004 Grand National. The 157th running of the world famous race attracted the maximum permitted field of 40 horses. Of the 40 original entries one was withdrawn before the race, 39 took part, with only 11 passing the finishing post. Four horses, Clan Royal, Jurancon 11, Bindaree and Joss Naylor started the race as joint favourites at 10/1 with Amberleigh House priced at 16/1. Trainer Ginger McCain gained his fourth Grand National victory, 31 years after his first with the legendary Red Rum, who remains the only three time winner of the race. McCain had few runners in the Grand National after Red Rum but was very confident of Amberleigh's chances saying “he was foot perfect. He's a professional. “He's the best thing that has happened to me for a long, long time”.
Graham Lee, the horses jockey, had kept him tucked in at the back before gradually recovering ground on the second circuit. At the final fence the race seemed to be between three horses. Clan Royal, Hedgehunter and Lord Atterbury who all came to the fence together with Amberleigh House 10 lengths adrift. Hedgehunter, the long time race leader fell, while the other two horses began to tire. With perfect timing and enough in reserve, Amberleigh House caught the leader Clan Royal at the Elbow, to win the 4M 4F race by three lengths. Amberleigh House had finished third in the Grand National the previous year and had been beaten by Clan Royal in November 2003 over the same fences in the Tote Becher Chase. Lord Atterbury finished third, with Monty's Pass the previous years winner fourth in the race, on which the public gambled an estimated £200 million. The total prize money for the race was £600,000 with the victorious Amberleigh House receiving £348,000. The 2004 race was the first to be broadcast on the Internet to UK subscribers, via the BBC website.
