1985 Grand National Results

The 1985 Grand National was won by 11 year old Last Suspect in a time of 9 minutes and 42.7 seconds. The horse was owned by Anne, Duchess of Westminster, trained by Capt. TA Forster and ridden by Hywel Davies.

A shock winner at a price of 50/1 he beat Mr Snugfit into second place by one and a half lengths. His owner had refused to let the great Arkle compete at Aintree and was equally reluctant to enter Last Suspect. Originally trained in Dublin he was moved on to be trained by Capt. Forster who had already turned out two Grand National winners, Well To Do [1972] and Ben Nevis [1980].

Last Suspect’s breeding credentials were excellent but he had gained a reputation for being moody and unreliable, losing interest easily and pulling himself up, which is exactly what he did in his prep race for Aintree. His owner and trainer decided he should be withdrawn from the National but jockey Hywel Davies had other ideas. He used his powers of persuasion to convince the Duchess of Westminster to enter the horse, on the grounds that he had never fallen, did not lack stamina and had never unseated a jockey.

The favourite was Greasepaint at 13/2, he had been runner up twice, also popular were Hallo Dandy the previous years winner, West Tip was showing lots of promise as was Mr Snugfit who was in winning form.

The first shock of the race came at the first fence when Hallo Dandy fell and on the second circuit West Tip was looking like a winner when he came to grief at Becher’s. At the last Mr Snugfit was in the lead with Corbiere lying second but Last Suspect found some hidden reserves and began closing the gap with every stride.

He passed Corbiere and less than a hundred yards from the finish the ‘no hoper’ snatched victory from Mr Snugfit with Corbiere in third place and Greasepaint in fourth position.

Last Suspect was retired for a short time but brought back in time for the 1986 Grand National, he was now 12 years old and showed his old reluctance to race, being pulled up at the start of the second circuit, he was retired for a second and final time after the race.
