According To Pete

Trainer Malcolm Jefferson was a very happy man when the weights for the 2012 Grand National were announced and his charge had been given a solid 10-12 by the BHA Handicapper. Guaranteed to line-up on April 14th, barring any injury between now and then, According To Pete is hoping to capitalise on his recent good form and despite being 11 years old, still has plenty to offer the Grand National.

According To Pete has had five runs this season and powered home in the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock on January 21, 2012. The 24f race was held over heavy going and jockey Harry Haynes said Pete “finished very tired” after jumping every fence perfectly. The gelding walked home after the last fence of the grueling race.

His most recent outing was at Kelso on 3rd March 2012 in the Totepool.com Premier Chase where he finished a respectable 2nd while carrying 11-04. He finished 4L behind the ultimate winner Master Of The Hall.

According To Pete also raced on December 26th 2011 in the Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase at Wetherby. He won that race also in very comfortable fashion. The race was considered a big win for Pete at the time, as he had not won since 2008.

He began his jumping career in 2005 with a third place finish before going on to win two races in two months. He finished the year with a second before going on a long 2006 campaign. He recorded three victories that year out of ten starts. His 2007 campaign was less successful with zero wins and one fall in six starts. He had ten starts in 2008 and put together four back-to-back wins before coming up short in 2009 and 2010 in a combined eleven starts.

According To Pete is a eleven year old bay gelding by Accordion. He is trained by Malcolm Jefferson and owned by Mr P Nelson. He has five wins out of 14 chase starts, as well as 2 seconds and 2 thirds.
