Neptune Collonges began his career in 2005 and quickly won two races, most notably the Grade 2 William Hill Winter Novices' Hurdle at Sandown. Neptune Collonges raced six times in 2006. He won two races at the beginning and a third at end of the year with his most notable win coming in the Grade 2 Brit Insurance Prestige Novices' Hurdle at Haydock.
He only raced three times in 2007, but finally got his first Grade 1 win in the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup Chase at Punchestown. He then returned in 2008 to successfully defend his title in that race. He had four other starts that year and won one of them.
He raced only twice in 2009, but made it count with a victory in the Grade 1 Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Leopardstown. Unfortunately, he was also injured in his other race that year, the Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup. His connections said that the injury did not show up until later, but they were sure it happened in that race. It was enough to keep him out the rest of the year.
Neptune Collonges did not race again until the latter part of 2010. He had two starts, but did poorly in both of them. He began to regain his form in 2011 with a win in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham. Unfortunately, he did not do as well in his last four starts that year. He has two starts and two second place finishes so far in 2012.
Neptune Collonges is an eleven year old grey gelding by Dom Alco out of Castille Collonges. He is owned by Mr J Hales and was trained by Paul Nicholls. He has 27 lifetime Chase starts and out of those, eleven wins, three seconds and two thirds.
Neptune Collonges, despite all the odds of being asked to carry 11-06 and being 11 years old gave the race of his life in 2012 and went on to win the Grand National in tremendous style giving trainer Paul Nicholls his first win in this race.
He was subsequently retired from National Hunt racing but now competes in Dressage so hopefully we will see him in the future competing for Team GB in the Olympics!
