Trained by George Bewley and owned by Sue Johnson, Abbeybraney is the 11 year old Irish horse who was previously owned by prolific race horse owner Graham Wylie from 2008 until November 2011. He was bought, by Wylie, for 200,000 guineas with the aim of being a Grand National horse. But despite his best efforts in 2010 he didn’t make the cut.
With 13 chase starts in his career, Abbeybraney has returned one win, with three second places and five thirds with his only win coming in December 2009 when he won the SIS Novices Chase at Hexham over 3m 1f. I should mention however that there were only four horses in that particular race and one of them pulled up.
His last two races have been reasonably successful with a third place in each but in his only race of 2010, the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham, he pulled up and fell and pulled up in his only two races of 2011 and the race he fell in was the Becher Handicap Chase at Aintree on 3rd December, where West End Rocker ultimately won.
Having been given an incredibly low 9-05, Abbeybraney did not make the cut for the 2012 Grand National as was not entered again in 2013.
