At the last minute Neptune Equester finally got the green light to line-up in 2012 following the withdrawal of two horses at the last scratchings deadline. At number 40, he was one of the rank outsiders for the bookies.
Trained by Brian Ellison, Neptune Equester had 16 chase starts with four wins, a second and two thirds before the 2012 grand national. Unfortunately his top speed was incredibly slow and in his last run out at Doncaster he topped out at a TS of only 68.
His original 9-09 by the BHA Handicapper had to be revised upwards to a minimum of 10-00 as he secured himself a spot at number 40, in the 2012 Grand National. And despite the doubt, he managed to successfully complete the course, finishing in 13th spot.
