Walsh Rides On His Own
The decision that we’ve all been waiting for has finally been made! Ruby Walsh has chosen to partner the Willie Mullins trained, Graham Wylie owned, On His Own in the 2012 Grand National.
Initially it was thought that Walsh would ride the then ante-post favourite, Prince De Beauchene, but the nine-year-old misses the race through injury. When he was ruled out speculation was rife and many thought he would opt for his father’s horse Seabass, which would have, inadvertently, taken the ride from his sister Katie.
Walsh also had the option of the Paul Nicholls-trained Neptune Collonges, who will now be ridden by second jockey Daryl Jacob. Explaining Walsh’s decision, Mullins said on his website: “After some pleasing work on the gallops this week, Ruby has decided to ride On His Own in the Grand National.”
With the news that Ruby has been confirmed on On His Own, the two time Grand National winning jockey will no doubt see the odds on him winning for a third time slashed over the coming days. Walsh has won the race twice, in 2000 on Papillon and in 2005 aboard Hedgehunter.
