Katie’s Dream Comes True

Hailing from racing dynasty, jockey Katie Walsh has more than her fair share of expectations on her shoulders. Daughter of training legend Ted Walsh and sister to one of the greatest jump jockeys of all time, Ruby Walsh, she has her work cut out for her tomorrow, her first ever Aintree Grand National.

But keeping a cool, calm head, she isn’t getting carried away with the hype and the fact that she has a realistic chance of becoming the first female jockey to ever ride an Aintree Grand National winner. Although so does her sister-in-law Nina Carberry!

She says it is a “dream come true” just to be riding in this year’s Grand National and told the BBC Breakfast’s Mike Bushell she will be happy just to complete the race.

Riding Seabass tomorrow, a horse she knows very well, her chances of not only completing the course, but placing or even winning on it are very high but the challenge ahead is not an easy one for the debut rider so fingers crossed for both her and Nina.

Katie walked the course yesterday and has even been given insider tips from her big brother Ruby saying: “He gave me a couple of pointers. I’m not saying what they are. They’re between Ruby & me”

The omens are good though. Ted Walsh turns 62 years old tomorrow and Papillon was number 13 when he won in 2000. Seabass is number 13 tomorrow!!

Hopefully the girls can bring their A game and give the boys a run for their money!
