It's a fantastic position to be in as a trainer – having five potential horses ready to line up for the Grand National. Donald McCain entered five, the most by any UK trainer, and has high hopes that three of them will start on April 6th.
At the first scratching stage he withdrew Fabalu who was unlikely to make the cut anyway and he has since confirmed that although Cloudy Lane is still in, he won't be running in the National but instead will opt for the Foxhunters Chase both at Cheltenham and Aintree.
He did confirm that Weird Al, Across The Bay and Ballabriggs will all line up but clearly confused at the way the odds are going for his runners saying “It seems strange that Across The Bay won a Grade Two Hurdle at Haydock and didn’t move in the betting. Yet you win a bad hurdle race in Ireland and you become favourite.
“But they are all good and hopefully they will all get there ready.”
Across The Bay is his best chance and is a punters dream at 40/1 ante-post. Great form, perfect weight, age and a Grand National winning trainer and he looks very good to get placed if not win it!
