It's no surprise that most of the world is waiting with bated breath to finally see a female jockey win the Grand National and with each year that passes we seem to be getting ever closer to this remarkable and historical moment.
Genuinely a contender in 2012, Katie Walsh made progress by becoming the highest placed female in a National when she finished 3rd on Seabass and with such a phenomenal amount of support in 2013, many are hoping that she go the whole way and win it this year. But even Katie realises that the task in front her is not going to be easy.
Recently she spoke to the Irish Independent saying “Seabass gave me an unbelievable spin last year and when we pulled up, there was a smile on my face as if I was after winning it.
“For a few seconds I did think, ‘My God, I'm not going too bad here', but he emptied a bit on the run-in.
“I can't wait to try again, but it will be tougher this time because Seabass is a year older and has risen sharply in the weights.”
And while the focus is firmly on her for this year's renewal, Nina Carberry will be hot on her heals and may have an even better chance of winning it if plans for the Dessie Hughes trained Tofino Bay come to fruition.
The most successful female jockey in the Grand National, Carberry was riding Tofino Bay for the first time at the Cheltenham Festival producing a magnificent performance to finish second. Owned by Michael O'Leary, Tofino Bay is also entered into the Irish Grand National which takes place on April 1st, just five days before Aintree and no decision has yet to be made as to where exactly he will go next week.
Hughes feels that Carberry deserves to ride him at Aintree and if O'Leary heeds the trainer then we could all be in for an almighty show down as both of these horses stand a fantastic chance of winning, particularly Tofino Bay who is better weighted.
Either way, wouldn't it be fantastic to finally see the ultimate glass ceiling get absolutely shattered?
**UPDATE: Nina Carberry currently has a whip ban which will rule her out of the Grand National and Irish National**
