When you have as many horses as trainer Paul Nicholls, occasionally you need to call in resources from further a field and that’s exactly what the Champion trainer is doing this upcoming weekend.
Weather pending, there are quite a few meetings on across the country this weekend including Down Royal, Newmarket, Wetherby and Ascot and it looks like Nicholls will be sending his horses to quite a few of them.
With stable jockey Daryl Jacob still recovering from his recent shoulder operation, Nicholls has drafted in the talents of Sam Twiston-Davies to partner his Wetherby-bound duo Unioniste and the epic Tidal Bay.
Speaking to Racing UK Twiston-Davies said “Paul rang me at the start of the week to mention what the plan was going to be and I’m going down to school them both tomorrow.”
Of course he is also booked on rides for his father, Nigel Twiston-Davies at Wetherby including Tara Rose but what is interesting is that one of the Nicholls rides will go up against Billy Magern who is usually ridden by Sam.
He said of the Nicholls horses “I’ve watched Unioniste plenty, usually because I’ve been finishing behind him – he looks a smashing horse.
“And I remember watching Tidal Bay when I was a kid, I always had a soft spot for him.”
Despite his tremendous success with his own horses Twiston-Davies has never had a win with Nicholls despite riding out for him on three different occasions, maybe Wetherby will give him the win he is looking for.
