The racing world and fans of A.P. McCoy held their breath today as arguably the greatest jockey in the world lined up at Towcester Racecourse in a bid to win one last race that would see him hit the most remarkable of all racing milestones – 4,000 wins!
From his first win on board Legal Steps for Jim Bolger at Thurles Racecourse in 1992 and through every major race any professional jockey could ever dream of winning, McCoy finally hit win number 4,000 on board Mountain Tunes for trainer Jonjo O’Neill in the 15.10 Hovice Hurdle at Towcester today. It was an epic race as he battled to the finishing line beating his nearest rival by a neck to the cheers and roars of the huge crowd who’d gathered in the hopes of seeing history being made.
In a career that has spanned 21 years, 39 year old Anthony Peter McCoy has achieved the near on impossible and added yet another staggering record to his already impressive and unparalleled list which includes 289 wins in one season and a record winning five wins at the Cheltenham Festival all wile riding in over 15,000 races covering over 40,000 miles of courses the length and breadth of both the UK and Ireland.
