National hunt jockey turned trainer, Johnny Farrelly looks set to field his first Grand National runner as a trainer when Battle Group takes to the Aintree fences on Saturday April 5th 2014.
Having himself ridden in four Nationals – his first in 2008 on Joaaci but fell at the 20th, 2009 on Arteea who finished in 10th spot, again in 2010 on Piraya who placed 13th and the last time in 2011 again on Piraya who completed the course in 19th spot – he is primed to know what it takes to train and run a National horse.
The fact that he has managed to field a Grand National runner is remarkable given that he’s only held his licence for just under two years but Battle Group has proven himself at Aintree and astoundingly won two races within 48 hours there at last year’s festival.
Can he repeat the success in 2014? Only time will tell but if he does the honours will go to Farrelly, who at just 29 years of age, is one of the youngest trainers to field a horse this year.
