106 entries were confirmed for the 2021 Grand National and so began the wait for the BHA Handicapper to work his magic. Two weeks later and via a live broadcast aired on Racing TV, Ed Chamberlain sat down with Martin Greenwood and we all become privy to the weights and how they would impact the National.

Via zoom, Ruby and Katie Walsh added extra context to the discussion as we discovered that three horses had been allocated top weight of 11-10. They are Bristol De Mai, Easysland, and Santini.

Just behind them were Delta Work, Presenting Percy, and Tiger Roll – all on 11-09. Though it quickly became clear that Delta Work was injured and would not run.

The handicapper worked off a top rating or mark of 167 and that puts Tiger Roll on 166. Trainer Gordon Elliott, who had also joined earlier for a chat, as well as Ruby Walsh, both agreed that having won the race twice, there wasn’t much else Martin Greenwood could have done.

That will still not keep owner Michael O’Leary happy. He had previously advised that if the handicapper lumbered Tiger Roll with too heavy a weight then they would look at alternative options. Those include only running at Cheltenham, opting for the Irish Grand National, or simply retiring him.

So with the question mark still hovering over Tiger Roll’s head, his odds slipped in the betting. It quickly became clear that Burrows Saint, from trainer Willie Mullins had been quite nicely weighted on 10-13.

But is it as good as Cloth Cap from Jonjo O’Neill who was handed 10-05? Given that he won the Ladbrokes Trophy Chase in November, he is looking very good for the 2021 Grand National.

Full List Of 2021 Grand National Weights

So with the weights now out how does the potential field look? Martin Greenwood has suggested that horses numbered up to 70 will definitely make the cut.

Since the Weights Were Announced

There has been some movement in both the field and the odds since the weights were revealed. As mentioned above, Delta Work is now injured and out of contention. Yorkhill, previously at number 54 has been retired.

Unfortunately for all involved, The Conditional (number 44) suffered a fatal injury at Newbury on February 21st. The Conditional is best remembered for winning the Ultima Handicap Chase at last year’s Festival. In the Denman Chase, he suffered what proved to be a fatal hind leg injury setting off down the back straight.

Another entry, St Barts from trainer Philip Hobbs did not qualify. The rules state that a horse must have run at least three times in Steeple Chases run under the Rules of Racing of the same Recognised Racing Authority up to and including February 14th. St Barts had only started twice under those rules and so did not make the cut.

Saint Xavier from trainer Richard Hobson has also been declared a non-runner since the weights came out.

Next Stage For the Grand National

So we have passed through the first two stages of this year’s proceedings. 106 were entered and weights were revealed on February 16th.

Next up is the first declaration stage. That is the 2nd of March and trainers can withdraw their runners at this stage. So the runners mentioned above will be removed from the list and the numbers adjusted accordingly.

The second scratchings deadline is the 23rd of March. This follows Cheltenham so depending on how the runners with entries into both festivals have done, trainers can decide to take them out of Aintree contention.

The five-day confirmation stage is the 5th of April and this is where we really start to see the final line-up of 40 horses come together. But with five days to go and the weather ever-changing, there is still one last chance for withdrawals. That is the final declaration stage on the 8th of April.

Until then, check out the odds and runners with Paddy Power bookmakers. They are now offering Non Runner Money Back on the Grand National betting market which means if you back a horse and it doesn’t run, for whatever reason, you get your money back on the bet.
