A first on many levels for Surface To Air in the 2011 Grand National. Having never been entered before this was definitely new territory for the 10 year old, trained by Chris Bealby, also a first time trainer in the National. It was also a first time ride for jockey Tom Messenger who saddled him for the race.
Having started the race as a rank outsider, generally 50/1 with most bookmakers, Surface To Air did exceptionally win to stay the course and prove his critics wrong. His trainer was very pleased with the preparations and told BBC Lincolnshire: “All the hard work has been done now, it is amazing being involved and it is quite nerve-wracking on a daily basis.
“I hope he will get round, if he got in the money that would be even better. If he won you wouldn’t see me for weeks.”
Surface To Air only returned to action at Market Rasen earlier in the month after suffering from tendon problems following his victory in the Summer National at Uttoxeter in June 2008, essentially forcing him out of action for nearly three years.
