Viking Blond was just seven years old when he had his first go at the national in 2012. He went off at 80/1 with Sam Twiston-Davies on board and barely made it to the first fence before he fell.
Another year older, and hopefully a little bit wiser, he was given another entry and lined up as one of the final 40 on April 6th for the 2013 Grand National.
Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, Viking Blond has put in some much needed hard work over year and had run in no fewer than six races, including four chases and two hurdles one of which was the Coral Welsh Grand National on January 5th 2013 where he pulled up.
With an official rating even lower than that of 2012, he didn’t originally make it into the top 40 but at the last declaration stage, two days before the race, he made it into the race and ran off 10-00 giving the Twiston-Davies three runners in 2013.
He went off at 66/1 with Adam Wedge on board but pulled up at fence 14. With two failed attempts, Nigel Twiston-Davies will have to decide if third times a charm as Viking Blond will only be 9 years old when the 2014 Grand National rolls around so we may see him again yet.
