A recent interview with Ted Walsh in The Telegraph highlighted just how badly he wants his daughter, and jockey, Katie Walsh to win at the 2013 Grand National. When asked if he would prefer another Grand National win or the elusive Cheltenham Gold Cup win, Walsh admitted “I think that if Katie were riding Seabass, I would rather it was another National”.
But don’t think that it’s a done deal. With Seabass primed to have another prep race this weekend if he runs in the BobbyJo Chase at Fairyhouse, Katie will partner him but if connections opt for Naas on Sunday then Ted Walsh says “If we go for the race on Sunday, then it will come down to whether Willie Mullins has something in it. If he doesn’t, then Ruby would ride.”
And, it would appear that the same premise applies to the 2013 Grand National. If, by some unfathomable reason, Willie Mullins didn’t have an entry lined up on April 6th the Ruby Walsh would possibly go with Seabass but as Mullins is looking very secure with the two ante-post favourites On His Own and Prince De Beauchene it’s a highly unlikely scenario.
And while on the subject of Grand National runners Walsh said about Colbert Station “He’s a good jumper and has the right profile for the National, but he lacks experience. I’d like to run him either at Leopardstown or Naas early next month”. So watch this space!
