This is the time of year when no jockey wants to get injured, at least not badly enough to rule them out of the most lucrative festivals of the season but that’s just what happened to top jockey Robert Thornton who broke his right arm in a heavy fall at Southwell on Monday.
And to make matters even worse for Choc, he’s also stated that he has suffered spinal damage following the fall from Our Phylli Vera in the 2m handicap hurdle which hopefully will not require surgery but will rule him out of the 2013 Cheltenham Festival.
Thornton tweeted on Wednesday morning: “Few tests yesterday, not great news looks like I’ll be missing the rest of the season!” He later added: “I am absolutely gutted.”
Of course the news also means that he will miss the opportunity to ride in the 2013 Grand National as well, a race that he has ridden in on 14 previous occasions, most recently on Alan King’s West End Rocker in 2011.
Booked for a number of rides with Alan King, the trainer said on his website “We’ll get by as we are lucky to have Wayne, but I really feel for Choc.”
Get well soon Choc!
