Irish trainer Dessie Hughes has never won a Grand National and despite his best attempts has only come in 2nd with Black Apalachi in 2010. In 2013 he had two excellent contenders in the form of Tofino Bay and Rare Bob, both of whom were on terrific form and full of all the potential needed to get around the tricky fences and get placed or even win.
Tofino Bay was given a weight of 11-01, which would have been the lowest weight he had ever run off but very close to the final declaration date he was withdrawn with some speculating it was because his potential jockey, Nina Carberry, had suffered a ban at the time.
Up until last season his form was excellent and other than in his first race, back in 2008, he had finished in the top 4 of every single race he had started. He had never fallen, unseated his rider or pulled up and had won twice at three miles.
Unfortunately his seasonal return this year has not been as successful and from his two starts, at Down Royal and Navan, he has both fallen and pulled-up and all things considered both trainer and connections decided not to enter him into the 2014 Grand National.
