We started with 84 entries back at the end of January and slowly but surely they’ve been whittled down via the declaration stages to just 49 as of today. At the five day declaration stage, eight horses were withdrawn and include:
Prince De Beauchene was injured last week, Magnanimity has gone to the Irish National, Wyck Hill hasn’t fully recovered from a race cut sustained back in February, Beshabar and Lion na Bearnai couldn’t get fit enough in time, Tofino Bay has been pointed at another race meeting, Bostons Angel is possibly still tired from Cheltenham and no reason has been given by Bob Lingo connections.
That leaves 49 still in contention with Imperial Commander heading up the field on maximum weight of 11-10 which means that there is no weight increase for the rest of the field. Of course it also means that eight horses, previously not in contention, have now had the door open for a run in the 2013 Grand National!
Other factors to consider are that some horses are still entered into the Topham Chase including three time winner Always Waining who’s trainer Peter Bowen has confirmed that they will wait up until the last declaration stage to determine where he will go. If the ground is on the softer side he will switch races and go for the Topham!
