100 horses move forward into the next stage of the 2014 Crabbies Grand National after 15 potential runners were withdrawn at the first scratchings stage on February 25th as announced earlier today.
The highest rated horse to go at this stage was Rubi Light but it didn’t come as a surprise as his trainer had already previously advised that after a relatively poor run he would be rested up for the rest of the season.
Planet Of Sound for Philip Hobbs was also taken out for the second year in a row as was the young Merry King, trained by Jonjo O’Neill.
Only two of the original top 40 were taken out which made way for both Our Father from David Pipe and Sire Collonges, from Paul Nicholls, to get a guaranteed spot on the starting line-up.
The big surprises were Highland Lodge and White Star Line both but it’s not who was withdrawn but who wasn’t that has caused some confusion.
Cape Tribulation had all but been ruled out by trainer Malcolm Jefferson as he hasn’t fully recovered from an injury to his leg but yet he wasn’t withdrawn although Paddy Power are no longer accepting ante-post bets on him.
Also not ruled out was Massini’s Maguire despite his very poor performance on his last run out where he finished last from 10 runners and that had been his first run since February 2012.
